Tyler Hoyt
MA, RCT, CCC, RMFT

After spending 18 years working professionally with children, youth, and families in programming, administrative, and executive roles for non-profit organizations in Canada and the United States, Tyler felt compelled to further his training and become better equipped to help individuals grow well and couples and families grow well together. His vision for Grow Well Individual & Family Therapy is to expand the reach of the clinic by partnering with additional counsellors to better serve the city of Halifax and surrounding communities.

Tyler obtained his master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and, in addition to his degree, he has completed his Level Two training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy. When working with couples, Tyler helps couples enhance their relationship by building trust, love, and loyalty. In counselling, Tyler teaches couples on how to communicate effectively through conflict, dream together, and create shared meaning for their life together. In his training in the Gottman Method, Tyler can also help parents enhance their ability to coach their children to manage emotions, regulate behaviours, navigate social relationships, maximize intellectual success, and develop confidence.

Although his training is in marriage and family therapy, Tyler equally enjoys working with individuals facing varying mental health, career, and interpersonal problems. He operates from a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) framework that seeks to explore underlying problematic thoughts and beliefs and how they affect how a person feels and behaves.

In session, Tyler blends deep conversation, light-hearted humour, and the occasional gentle challenge at the pace and tolerance of the client. Tyler is also an ordained pastor who is willing to engage in spiritual conversations, if the client desires. In working with Tyler, clients have reported feeling heard, understood, affirmed, validated, and comfortable to discuss even the most delicate parts of their life journey.

Tyler has been married for 15 years and has two children ages 13 and 10, and one fur-child who he aptly calls his “therapy dog,” only because he causes his two-legged family members to need therapy. Tyler enjoys living an active lifestyle in all four seasons of the year. Whether windsurfing, cliff diving off waterfalls, downhill skiing, playing softball, hockey, curling, or throwing some weights around in the gym, Tyler loves getting the juices flowing in individual recreation, family activities, and team sports. Tyler is native to the Maritimes, being born and raised in the Fredericton-area of New Brunswick and 8 years in Nova Scotia.
